This "talking event" explores the behind-the-scenes story of the architecture that has shaped the city of Osaka, offering fresh perspectives to make strolls through the city even more enjoyable.
Nikken Sekkei, a firm deeply involved in Osaka’s urban development, along with architectural historian Professor Shunsuke Kurakata, will engage in a dialogue to delve into the evolution of urban design along Midosuji Avenue and the design processes behind the latest projects such as Grand Green Osaka.
From the details of materials such as stone cladding to the evolution of urban development methods, this event spans various scales, weaving in human-centered anecdotes, such as behind-the-scenes stories, to help guests experience the connection between art, design, architecture and the city.

Taro Katsuyama(Left)

Born in 1965, Mr. Katsuyama has been involved in the design of numerous projects in central Osaka, including Nakanoshima, Midosuji and Umeda. Most recently, he also served as design director for the Grand Green Osaka development project. He is committed to creating architecture and public spaces that enrich people’s lives and enhance city appeal.

 

Hiroaki Otani(Right)

Chief Design Officer, Senior Director, Nikken Sekkei Ltd
Born in 1962, Mr. Otani has been involved in numerous projects in Osaka and Kyoto. His work includes the Nippon Life Insurance Company Headquarters complex along Midosuji, as well as Honmachi Garden City. Believing in the importance of full-scale studies, he works daily to create rich and vibrant urban environments.

Shunsuke Kurakata

Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka Metropolitan University
Born in 1971, Mr. Kurakata, in addition to his research on the history of modern and contemporary Japanese architecture, has been actively involved in promoting the value of architecture to the wider public, including participating in the launch of public architecture events such as Open House Osaka, the Kyoto Modern Architecture Festival, and the Tokyo Architecture Festival. His publications include Traveling Through Architecture, The Evil Le Corbusier, A Textbook for Enjoying Architecture, and many others.

Osaka City Central Public Hall

Osaka City Central Public Hall is a historic building done in Neo-Renaissance style. Completed in 1918, it was funded by a donation from Osaka citizen Einosuke Iwamoto. Since then, it has hosted operas, concerts and lectures, contributing to the development of culture and the arts in Osaka. In 2002, restoration work was carried out to return the building to its original design. The same year, it was designated as a National Important Cultural Property.
