The gallery will hold an exhibit by Gutai Art Association member Shozo Shimamoto, known for a bold style of performance that breaks from brush-based expression in surprising ways “never done before,” such as splattering a canvas with paint fired from a cannon or thrown in bottles. The exhibit will showcase his large-format “bottle throwing” paintings and his “holes” works born from unexpected outcomes.

Artist Profile

Shozo Shimamoto

Shozo Shimamoto (1928-2013) was the founding member of the Gutai Art Association (1954-1972). Through numerous unique ideas and experimental techniques, he continuously released works that jumped among differing categories. His lifetime of works truly embodied a “Gutai” spirit of “do what none have done before.”

It introduces Japanese and overseas artists such as Hiroto Kitagawa, Robert Kushner, and photographer Toshio Shibata.
