Lumps of clay hurled towards the Earth from outer space and turned into pottery?! Kunito, a lively artist, made these dynamic sculptures. “If you drop a lump of clay from space towards the earth, won’t it be fired by the compression heat as it enters the atmosphere and becomes pottery?” This work was born out of such an idea, and its appeal lies in its large-scale conception, which is unique to Kunito, who has a background in both pottery and sculpture. It is a work that inadvertently makes you imagine the moment when clay flew from space.

Artist Profile

KUNITO

Born in 1981, Nara. Kunito graduated from Kanazawa College of Art, Graduate School of Ceramics, and received a PhD in sculpture from the same university.
Based on the concept of the duality of things, Kunito uses resin, cloth, pottery, wood, light, and various other materials to find conceptual boundaries in a wide range of expressions such as installations and sculptures, and create immaterial themes such as time and memory.
