Inspired by the various materials collected in satoyama, each designer conducts research and creates artworks with experimental methods. For this exhibition, they focus on nikki tree that holds the memories of local elderly people, hinoki cypress cut down due to a landslide, and kozo (paper mulberry) as a material used to make paper, and other accessible materials around the studio.

Through their artworks, they explore and interprets the relationship between people and materials.

Xylin

Xylin—meaning material forest—is a space for collecting, researching, and processing materials available in a satoyama in Hashimoto, Wakayama. Researching the stories associated with the materials found in the mountains and their relationship to daily lives, artists and designers create objects by interweaving traditional wisdom and experimental methods. This exhibition will feature works created by Isamu Hazama, who runs the space; teo rhe, a Korean designer based in the Netherlands who focuses on material research and innovative object-making; and Wataru Imamura, an Osaka-based designer who creates works focusing on rectilinear lines.
