From the white-semi-three-dimensional pieces with irregular surfaces in the ’60s to the works incorporated film, video and photography after the ’70-’90s, and furthermore performance works in which the artist intervenes his or others’ bodies into those expressions, Norio Imai has kept energetically producing works with broad mediums and formats as if he sensitively responds to the changes in the times. The sound is a key existence that has grabbed his interests since the very early time in his career with such diversity. In this solo exhibition, we will showcase the works which Imai produced using sounds of the heartbeats as his material in the ’70s as well as his newest piece.

artist profile

Norio Imai

Born in Osaka in 1946, he became the youngest member of Gutai Art Association in 1965 at the age of 19. He attracted attention with his white reliefs with protrusions and holes made on the surface of canvas, and his works using industrial materials brought a new style to “Gutai”. He began working in photography and video in the late 1960’s and he is also recognized as one of the leading early video art artists in Japan. Public collections: Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, and Getty Center (L.A.), and others.

ARTCOURT Gallery

Since ARTCOURT Gallery opened its doors in Osaka in 2003, the gallery has focused on internationally acclaimed artists such as Gutai and Hitoshi Nomura who stood at the forefront of postwar Japanese art as well as Yo Akiyama who have cultivated a unique aesthetic to deepen new forms of crafts, and younger artists who will forge the future. We organize exhibitions, supply commissioned work for architectural spaces, and strive to place works in the collections of museums and collectors all over the world. In 2018 we opened ACG Villa Kyoto and aim to be a base designed to convey outstanding Japanese contemporary art to the world.
