To commemorate the 160th anniversary of Takeuchi Seiho’s birth, the exhibition includes everything from one of his best-known works, ‘An Evening Shower’, to rare handwritten letters from the Takashimaya Archive collection. Alongside his works, this exhibition will introduce the unknown facets of “the man Seiho” - his joy, anger, apologies, and laughter.

Artist Profile

Takeuchi Seiho

Born in Kyoto in 1864. Seiho was a master of modern Japanese painting. He spent his entire life exploring and pursuing new forms of Japanese painting. From 1889, he worked at Takashimaya painting studio, where he made sketches for export dyed textiles and was involved in the production of “artistic dyed textiles” that Takashimaya exhibited at national and international expositions. 1937: awarded the first Order of Culture; died in 1942.
