The “line” is the unit of construction common to wire and manga. The ambivalence of the wire, which is three-dimensional but perceived as flat, and the cartoon, which is two-dimensional but perceived as three-dimensional, allows for an expression that straddles the line between wire and cartoon, two-dimensional and three-dimensional.
